Riccarton Community Church (RCC) runs a programme called Carriers, a one-year leadership development commitment designed to fit around a day-a-week schedule.
Carriers is short for 'Carriers of the Vision', with the idea that participants are engaged in the church's vision "to see our city become a place of Christ's transforming hope for the world". Typically this includes a half day of service in a ministry, their regular class times, reading, and reflection.
Carriers interns tend to do this alongside their usual work, study and/or family commitments. Associate Pastor Mark Wells says:
"We have had people right through from young people taking a gap year after high school to parents of high schoolers. Some people have been transitioning back into paid work after a break raising kids and Carriers has helped with confidence and a greater sense of calling."

Many participants grow in confidence, intentionality, and deeper connections with the church. Associate Pastor Mark Wells writes:
"From my perspective, Carriers is a great chance to get some helpful input from leaders at RCC, make connections and build relationships, serve and clarify your calling, and discover what God might be directing you to in the next season.
"I can think of people who have expanded their leadership after having been in Carriers, and people who see themselves more a part of the church and part of achieving the vision."
